Jamie Takes His First Flight

At The Controls

Today Jamie fulfills a dream to take his first flight at the controls of a helicopter. On a clear blue spring day in Wanaka, Jamie had his introductory flight and one that we all hope paves the way for him to become a pilot.

This first experience at the controls saw him hovering, flying straight and level at altitude and then doing a low level run up the Clutha River.

Jamie Has Knee Operation

After injuring his knee in a skiing accident on the last day of the 2008 southern winter season in New Zealand, Jamie has had an operation to reconstruct the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee.

Here he is just after the operation. That leg brace will have to stay on for two weeks then he has about 8 weeks of rehabilitation before he can expect full strength. And of course he won’t be skiing this season either!

Here’s Jamie and his Mum, Robyn, at the Albatross colony in Dunedin, three days after his operation.

Southern Winter ’08
Jamie has spent the winter at Snow Park, Wanaka, New Zealand grooming the terrain park.
However, he wanted a break from 8 back to back winters so has decided to stay over in New Zealand for the southern summer and find work as a machine operator. He has enjoyed seeing the onset of spring and relaxing in the warmth of a real summer.
He will be in New Zealand for all of 2009 and assess his future after that.

As you can see is now sporting a beard. He has just returned to Park City, Utah, to groom the terrain park there for the upcoming northern winter ’07/’08.

Northern Winter ’06 / ’07

Jamie (Jay to his workmates) has spent the Northern winter driving groomers at Park City, Utah, USA.
As he is rostered on for the graveyard shift, 12.00am till 9.00am, he gets to see lots of sunrises from the cab of his Cat.

And speaking of cats, Jay has seen the footprints of a pair of Mountain Lions that live in the vicinity!

Winter ’06 at Mt Hutt

Jamie (Jay to his work mates) has spent the southern winter driving snow cats at Mt Hutt, New Zealand.

This involves lots of 4.00 am starts on the mountain in order to get the field open for the clients, but the views from the office window are pretty.

Jamie Turns 21 years
Jamie has had his 21st birthday party in a quiet gathering of close family and friends at a breakfast in Christchurch. We were not there but did make a phone call to him on his special day.

Jamie (on the right) had his sister Niki and brother Andrew at the celebration and here they are admiring a photo album that Graeme had compiled and left for him.

December ’05
Jamie leaves for Canada soon where he will work the northern winter at a ski field in Ontario in a terrain park coaching a team of young people in the art of trick skiing.
